Boutique north recently caught up with Asa from Past Future Clothing, the independent Manchester based clothing brand thats making a huge impact on the underground street wear scene! Check what he had to say here:
So tell us about how Past future started?
Past Future was born when i was studying an Art and Design BTEC at college, one of the class projects was to develop a design based on an animal of our choice off of a list provided by the tutor. I chose ‘Birdy’ and came up with the bird wearing big trainers, after discussing it with my friends i decided to get a run of 10 printed because of its popularity, they sold immediately, and thats when i realised i can make something from this.
What’s in-store for Past future clothing next? What can we expect?
Without giving too much away i’m really trying to focus on silhouettes for the next drop, expect the unexpected.
If you had to pick one piece from this collection as your personal highlight, what would it be?
Erm, without a doubt its got to be the eye-test jumper, Blizzard wore one when he featured on SBTV before the brand had even managed to get itself out there, and this rocketed PF into the spot light and really got its name on the map. But as for a recent highlight, the jamaican camo tee is the tee that broke the International barrier and got us shipping consistently overseas through its blog success!
We at Boutique north love the jamaican camp tee, Where did you get the idea for this? and why are you limiting it to only 20 tees per size?
Well as you probably know the popularity of weed in general has exploded over the last year or so, so i sat down, put 2 and 2 together and tryed to fill the niche, i hadn’t seen anything like it and loved the design, as i do with most designs i show my close friends, get some feedback and then make my decision weather to release or not. The whole 20 tee’s per size was done because of the way i like to buy clothes, if i know things are very limited or 1 off’s it appeals to me much more as an investment, than it would if i bought a tee which was mass produced.
So you guys are based in Manchester too right? Where would we find you guys hanging out on a night out here?
Yeah, partying’s one of my favourite past times, theres pretty much only one place i can properly enjoy myself on a night out, and thats The Murkage Cartel at South every Thursday.
We ask this to a lot of brands, so what new brands are you heavily into at the moment? Have any of them influenced the type of clothes Past Future have brought out?
I don’t really keep up with any other new brands, i feel constantly checking and having an interest in others work can only influence you to design like them, consciously or not, so i prefer to get my inspiration from stacks of very thin sliced tree’s.
And lastly, what are your goals for the next year or so for past future?
Well the new years looking interesting from the start, i move into my new studio in the NQ early Jan, once im settled in i’ll be working on the summer release, maybe a couple of boutiques will show interest who knows?
