Today we are excited to introduce you to MOJA Clothing. Just over 4 months old, this African inspired independent brand from London seems to be setting itself up for big things! Their Facebook page only went live a few weeks ago the reaction has been amazing.
The brand uses a traditional Tanzanian material called Kitenge to produce some unique, comfortable and top quality clothing. And it’s great to see such a young brand launching with a range of original shorts, not just your standard printed tee as you see so many brands try and fail with.
We caught up with Brij, the founder of MOJA Clothing, to find out a bit about him and his new independent brand. Here’s what he had to say:
“I am a final year student at UCL, studying Classics (Latin and Ancient Greek) – a far cry from the fashion industry I know… I am originally from Tanzania, but have been in boarding school in England since I was 10 years old. My parents still live out there and I go back pretty often. I realised that there was an inexplicable lack of real quality African inspired menswear. There has been a massive influx of African prints across the womenswear industry with such success that it seemed rather strange they were so absent from men’s clothing.
Hence, MOJA Clothing was born. I started with shorts as I wanted to make sure that we started small but did it RIGHT! MOJA is all about quality and comfort. All our products are made from Kitenge material. Kitenge is a local Tanzanian material, very similar in texture and feel to linen/cotton. It gets softer and softer with every wash and the materials we use are of the highest grade so the shorts do not run or shrink. The printing on the cloth is made by a traditional batik technique.
The name “MOJA” means “ONE” in Kiswahili (the local Tanzanian language). Since the company focuses on using unique, local Tanzanian kitenge designs which will guarantee you stand out of the crowd, “MOJA” seemed appropriate. A key feature about our brand is the fact we support local tailors, local factories and local talent, bringing them together and developing business opportunities for the local community in a fair and sustainable way. Comfortable, stylish and of the highest quality hand stitching, MOJA Clothing realises that to be successful, the customer must always come first. We promise to deliver the best quality and most trendy garments in the market, so that when you get your hands on a pair of MOJAs, it’s gonna be bloody hard to let go!
Just yesterday we started to get our new range under way. The plan is to do some very classy but casual slim fit shirts. We are hoping to have 4 different styles with a mixture of full kitenge and part kitenge/part linen. I will be sure to send you pictures of them once we have them in just over a month or so. Really excited for them to arrive, the prototypes were incredible.”
